Reinvention – “New Chinese Painting Movement in 1950s and 1960s” Exhibition

On September 8, 2018, the “New Chinese Painting Movement in 1950s and 1960s” Exhibition is unveiled on the fourth floor of CAFA Art Museum. It selected representative works, from the collection of CAFA Art Museum, that reveal the innovation history of the Chinese Painting in the 1950s and 1960s, and combed through the literature of discussion, exhibition articles and artworks that related to the reform of Chinese painting. In this both academic and artistic exhibition based on research, the visitors can get the viewing experience as if walking around a history book. The Exhibition of “Reinvention – New Chinese Painting Movement in 1950s and 1960s” is composed of three parts, the first part covers the text of “discussions on the transformation of Chinese painting”. In modern China, debates about art have started with “Chinese painting” since Kang Youwei (a Chinese scholar of the late Qing dynasty) became the first to criticize traditional Chinese painting. In this part, the debates are divided into three categories: “drawing on Western advantages”, “Keeping to traditional culture”, and “reflecting realistic life”, in which the discussions of the last one “reflecting realistic life ” laid the foundation of public opinion for the “New Chinese Painting Movement”, following by appeals for reforming Chinese painting from different perspectives of different people. The text of the first part uses a vertical timeline to present various ideas so the viewers can get a general understanding of the “New Chinese Painting Movement”. The second part is “painting from life for innovation”. In the process of establishing the creation norms of landscape painting, the practice in the 1950s turned towards “outdoor sketching” and there were four important regions in China contributed to the formation of landscape painting, which were “Beijing and Tianjin area”, “Jiangsu area”, “northwest district” and “Lingnan area”. In this part, landscape paintings of different areas are showcased, and these distinctive works also echo with the exhibition’s theme of “reinvention”. The third part is “new look of Chinese landscape”. With the rise of new Chinese painting, landscape painting broke through the traditional standard of values that considered “leisure” as the highest spirit, and it transformed into praises of the feelings for everything from nature, creating a unique vision of the times. The artistic language and form style of landscape painting have also changed, as there emerged many classic theme patterns, such as “location of a revolution”, “new look of town and country” and “cultural landscape”. Just as the curator Wang Chunchen pointed out: “If we want to promote Chinese painting studies, we have to trace back to its innovation course. This exhibition is just planned to reveal the innovation history of Chinese painting in the 1950s and 1960s. It selected works from the collection of CAFA Art Museum and part of the discussion articles to be shown for the public, and hope to encourage more significant creations of Chinese painting in today’s era.”
