The "Mosaic China: Mosaic Art Invitation Exhibition" was held at the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in October 2017, and was widely praised by the public. To further promote mosaic art, under the support of the China Artists Association, the exhibition went on national tour from Guangzhou to Wuhan, Xuzhou, Hefei, Nanjing and Shanghai. Now, the exhibition has landed in Beijing, and will meet the public from Oct 10 to Nov 8 at CAFA Art Museum.
The exhibition showcases over 100 artworks from more than 80 artists from fine arts academies and research institutes in China. The artists represent the highest achievements of mural painting and other painting genres across generations. Together they show the possibilities of mosaic art in art creation. With the exhibition we hope to further improve mosaic art, and its application in contemporary mural painting practice in China, which would hopefully influence the urban public art and the symbiotic public environment.

Mosaic art is a time-honored craft in western art history, originated from Mesopotamia, flourished in Ancient Greek and Rome civilizations, and widely applied in the Byzantine Empire and the Middle Age. The craft is to some extent an art form that spans across eras, as well as European and Asian continents. It was used to decorate both the magnificent royal palaces and churches, and the plain streets and folk houses. It has both the practical function of beautifying the architectural space and the aesthetic value of creating all kinds of mural painting. Many mosaic stone murals and stained glass have also become the treasure of western art history. The inlay craft in China, which is similar to mosaic art, is also time-honored, and widely used in the decoration of architecture and objects. The exquisiteness in choosing materials and techniques is an envidence of the craft's uncanny workmanship, which also embodies the traditional Chinese aesthetics and craftmanship.
The modern transformation of tradition, as well as the innovative development, is an important theme of Chinese culture in the new era. The rebirth of mosaic art and inlay craft needs the creativity of contemporary Chinese art and the reformation of contemporary crafts. Mr. Wang Yingsheng and colleagues at the Mural Art Committee of Chinese Artists Association work together to promote mosaic art practice, and facilitate innovation in the craft of mosaic art by researching and developing with enterprises. As a result, the materials and techniques of mosaic art could better set off the styles and languages of the works, which not only show the spirit of the work but also highlight the exquisite craftmanship of the mosaic art. The breathtaking aura that the mosaic artworks emit also owes to the artists' great control over the transformation of materials and medium.
As a metaphor of contemporary China's flourishing development, as a hope for the contemporary public art to shine its brilliance, the "Mosaic China" exhibition represents the cultural awareness and confidence, as well as the harvest of Chinese public art in the year of 2020.
