实验艺术公开课三:影像语言

艺术创作存在很多媒介,影像是其中之一。影像艺术在上世纪90年代进入中国,当时的浙江美术学院邀请德国汉堡美术学院密茨卡教授讲座,分两次向全校师生播映了德国大型录像艺术展的影像作品,这是中国与“录像艺术”这个名词的第一次感性接触。祁震老师从对这一起点的介绍开始,引出本雅明在《机械复制时代的艺术作品》一书中对影像的定义,即影像包括静态摄影和动态影像,但直到近十年来,影像的概念才专指动态影像。此外,影像在大众社会生活中的基本的功能大致分为:记录功能、纪实影像、叙事影像、实时影像(如现场直播)、虚拟影像(如数字美术馆),这些功能构成了影像的社会概念。

从埃及木乃伊、法国拉斯科洞窟壁画、中国西汉时期发明的皮影,到拉斐尔的作品《雅典学院》,祁震老师认为整个造型艺术的历史是追求形似的心理历程,艺术家不断复原眼睛所见,直至电影的出现才终于可以进行再现现实,表现动态。尽管电影于1895年发明,但电影的史前史非常丰富,从手影、皮影、走马灯、换盘、幻灯、到利用视觉暂留原理的诡盘、再到达盖尔的银版照相法、迈布里奇的实验、埃米·雷诺的“活动视镜”、“活动影戏机”、“光学影戏机”,还有爱迪生发明的“电影视镜”、法国卢米埃尔兄弟发明的“活动电影机”,在发明电影之前人类经历了漫长的实验和摸索过程。

祁震老师在追溯了电影出现的历史过程之后提出了另一个关键问题,那就是“影像如何进入艺术领域的?”事实上,在20世纪初期已经有艺术家开始使用影像媒介,在先锋派电影时期有艺术家与电影人合作,比如莱热拍摄的《机械芭蕾》、路易斯·布努艾尔与达利合作拍摄的超现实主义电影《一条安达鲁狗》等等。不过在谈这个问题之前回避不了的是艺术史从现代主义发展到后现代主义的历程。

从媒介的发展历史入手可以更好地把握媒介的属性,艺术史的研究对艺术创作也是非常有帮助的。现代主义艺术历经的一百年1860-1960年,跨越两次大战,正值西方资本主义高速发展时期。克莱夫·贝尔提出“有意味的形式”,认为一幅好的绘画作品内部线条、色彩等以某种方式组成某种形式或形式之间的关系,可以激发观众的美感,可以说贝尔的观点是一种以形式主义为审美的标准。这一标准被格林伯格继承,提出评判艺术的准则来自媒介内部。现代主义艺术理论对绘画进行评价时排斥任何绘画之外的内容,比如文学、戏剧、建筑等。直到20世纪60年代,现代主义艺术却遭遇到了一次严重的危机直至退出历史舞台。祁震老师给观众展示贾斯珀·约翰斯、劳申伯格、安迪·沃霍、布鲁斯·瑙曼的作品,指出后现代主义作品与之前的现代主义作品的区别在于艺术与生活的界限被打破了,来自生活之物,包括身体都可以成为艺术创作的材料。


随着现代主义艺术的终结,影像进入艺术领域。20世纪60年代,电视成为重要的政治宣传工具和商家发布产品广告的工具,被认为是“影像艺术之父”的白南准早期的作品就是试图反对被利用的电视,他选择的语言就是利用现成的电视里的影像,通过解构电视而达到解构电视影像的目的,从而对电视作为大众媒体的属性进行批判。1963年白南准在当时的联邦德国的一家画廊举办了一次个展,展览中的影像艺术被收藏,这被认为是影像艺术作品第一次被公开展示和收藏,也标志着影像艺术开始被艺术领域所接受。

影像记录是影像的基本功能,但当艺术家开始把影像引入到创作中时使用的就是影像的记录功能。后来经过艺术家的探索,艺术家的影像记录逐渐形成了一种表现语言,并逐渐发展出以下几种语言类型:一是艺术家对身体本能进行实验的影像记录,如布鲁斯·瑙曼在工作室里的行为艺术记录和维托·阿孔希的身体机能极限实验。另一类属于艺术家工作室中的影像自我表达,如彼得·坎普斯受到弗洛伊德的影响,在70年代创作了很多借助影像来进行自我认知的艺术作品。此外还有对艺术行为和偶发事件的影像记录语言。而在影像叙事方面有的利用重复叙事的手法,有的突破传统的封闭结构,进行开放式的叙事,还有些依靠观众记忆自主建构作品的叙事,以及瑞士艺术家皮皮洛蒂·瑞斯特影像作品采用的符号化叙事等不同类型的语言。

祁震老师的讲述进一步拓展到对影像技术的探索以及影像装置和投放方式相关性的讨论,反映出影像艺术创作的多元发展,既有比尔·维奥拉将生活中的电视搬进美术馆,批判公众受到电视的控制;美国的托尼·奥斯勒则将私密影像投射到公共空间,创作变得更加自由;又有中国艺术家宋东的作品《抚摸父亲》,还有美国艺术家劳瑞·安德森把一名囚犯的影像投射在画廊的一个石膏人像上,使影像背后潜藏着的真实“出场”了;更有皮皮洛蒂·瑞斯特在美术馆空间复原一个起居室,随着观众的走动,身体成为投影的载体,观众因而成为作品的一部分。最后祁震老师以虚拟现实、增强现实(如作品《阿特尔火车站影像散步》)以及与观众互动不断变化、生长的作品来为大家介绍了未来影像的发展方向。

祁震老师在总结中指出,影像和绘画、雕塑一样,同样是一种艺术的表达和创作媒介,艺术家一样可以通过研究影像的表现语言,不断进行各种实验,从而成为影像媒介的主导者。祁震老师的讲座为在场的观众们拓展了对影像艺术的认知,也使得观众对中央美术学院实验艺术学院的影像艺术教学有了更多的了解。

CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
