版画艺术在当代的发展是整个当代艺术发展的重要课题。中央美术学院于2016年发起成立国际学院版画联盟,并于同年9月在太庙艺术馆举办国际版画大展。中央美术学院院长范迪安表示,国际学院版画联盟的成立意味着国际不同美术学院在版画专业教学及版画研究创作中有了一个新的平台,是促进版画当代发展与版画教学国际交流新的契机。
2017年11月7日上午,国际学院版画联盟2017年最新活动——“国际木口木刻版画及文献展”在中央美术学院美术馆拉开帷幕。展览由中央美术学院主办,中央美术学院造型学院版画系、中央美术学院美术馆、国际学院版画联盟承办。国际学院版画联盟主席、中央美术学院版画系主任王华祥担任总策展人,比利时安特卫普皇家艺术学院版画系系主任皮特·博斯蒂尔(Peter Bosteels)、英国木口木刻协会主席盖瑞·沃丁顿(Geri Waddington)担任分策展人,展览执行策展人为国际学院版画联盟秘书长、中央美术学院副系主任杨宏伟。
“国际木口木刻版画及文献展”是国内首次大规模的、全面的展示木口木刻版画这一传统技艺在当代发展的展览。展览呈现包括英国、美国、比利时、法国、俄罗斯、保加利亚、意大利和中国9个国家100多位艺术家的200多件作品、木版和书籍,涵盖了古典部分、现代部分和当代部分。

开幕式上,范迪安院长表示,“木口木刻”是一种让人迷恋的木刻形式,因为它一方面体现了木版材质的自然属性,一方面展现出艺术家专注的创作情感。本次“国际木口木刻版画及文献展”能够将国际上不同学院的艺术家及作品聚集在一起,研究如何使木口木刻这种传统的版画形式在当代获得更好的发展,是非常有意义的。范院长进一步指出:“把传统和未来连接在一起,是我们今天的学术责任。”
木口木刻(Wood Engraving)版画起源于英国,它通常选择使用以实心钢条制成的专门刻刀,在纤维细密的硬质横断板面上进行创作,因这种木料纤维均匀竖立,刀刻时所受阻力均匀,不易碎裂,宜于细刻,能够展现出更加精细的线条和微妙的层次变化,进而将木刻版画的表现力表现到了极致。木口木刻版画打破了传统木刻中把黑轮廓线作为主要表现手段的雕刻方法,使用从黑到白不等的灰色调子来组成画面,使得画面更为细腻。
中国是版画的发源地——世界上现存最古老的木刻版画可追溯至敦煌石窟中发现的《金刚般若经》卷首佛画,它刻于唐咸通九年(公元868年),比欧洲的木版画要早五百年。而在此后漫长的历史长流中,木刻版画的传统虽然同时在东方和欧洲皆有所发展,但因人文差异、文化内涵等不同而各自发展出不同方向的技法。英国木口木刻协会主席盖瑞·沃丁顿指出了这种显著的差异:“最为明显的是,东方版画的套色与中世纪欧洲木版画的黑白线条雕版形成鲜明对比,绘制图像线稿的艺术家和在木头上雕刻的艺术家形成了不同的分工。”木口木刻版画直至二十世纪中叶才引进中国,此前中国对于这种版画技法并不熟悉。
在此背景下,中央美术学院举办本次“国际木口木刻版画及文献展”展览便有其特殊的时代使命与当代价值。国际学院版画联盟的成立,致力于推动版画学术的发展,研究并发掘版画在全球当代文化、当代艺术语境下的不可替代性。除了举办“国际木口木刻版画及文献展”展览以外,同期研讨会也于17日、18日进行,聚焦探讨木口木刻版画艺术这一传统技艺在当代的发展及现状问题。同时,主办方邀请英国、比利时和意大利的木口木刻艺术家于19日进行一场具有典型风格的木口木刻版画艺术家工作坊活动。
尽管版画在当代不再处于主流之位,但在众多版画人的努力之下,我们会发现业内开始发生一些令人惊喜的转变——人们逐渐重新发现版画的价值与品质,学生们再次对版画的潜能充满兴趣,在新兴的艺术语言中,历史悠久的工艺在新形式的视觉传达中被愈加重视,这也是国际版画联盟成立的目的及宗旨。
在全球信息时代到来之际,在全球科技处在新的发展的情景面前,如何使得木口木刻版画技术在体现本身语言独特性的价值下同时拓展出新的艺术表现力,并适应当代艺术环境的发展,从而在新技术、新媒体与新方法的支持下迸发新的生命力,是举办本次“国际木口木刻版画及文献展”展览最重要的价值之所在。

Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.
CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer
Article I
This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.
Article II
Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.
Article III
Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.
Article IV
Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.
Article V
During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.
Article VI
Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.
CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement
According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):
I. General Provisions
(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.
(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.
(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.
II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use
(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.
(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.
(3) Geographical Scope of Use
The applicable geographic scope is global.
The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).
III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use
Use in perpetuity.
IV. Licensing Fees
The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.
After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.
Additional Terms
(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.
(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.
(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.
Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer.
