Gary Hill生于1951,是一位生活和工作于华盛顿州西雅图市的美国艺术家。他经常被视为是视频艺术的开创艺术家之一,实际上,他在二十世纪六十年代末就开始创作金属雕塑作品,七八十年代,他创作了一些基于单通道的作品以及一些以视频和声音为基础的装置艺术作品。目前,他被人广为所知的是他在国际上展览的装置艺术和表演艺术作品,同时关注创新性的语言与技术,利用各式各样的媒介继续创作。

Tall Ships高船》

在全黑的走空间中,共有 12 位同种族,,性别的人影,或坐或站,等待观者的造访,这些人影是空间唯一的光源,悠远如远方的幻影.在造访者步入人影的感应空间时,启动电子开关装置,人影向造访者靠近,直到跟真人同高,人影会在造访者的面前,徘徊停,摆动身躯或凝视,直到造访者开,人影也转身渐渐远,回到原的位置,等待下一位造访者启动.

Gary Hill 说:任何可见物都有一个隐藏着的身影。在利用现代科技手段创造超前于物体出现的影像方面, Gary Hill 远远地走在了他人的前面。他录像中的人物十分逼真,你真实地感到他们似乎正与你同在一室,你仿佛可以听到他们的呼吸声。在1992年创作的高船中, Gary Hill 将许多人像投影在美术馆的一面很宽的墙上,观众似乎与这些人面对面地走在一起。你向前走,他们也向前走;你向后退,他们也向后退。 

当时我在西雅图的一家饭馆吃饭,看到墙上有一些历史的图片,是西雅图的大桥建成之前有一些超过这个桥的高度的大木船,它们在西雅图的河里航行,后来大桥建好之后这些船就不在了,所以这些照片的名字叫做《高船》。后来也就有了我的作品《高船》。当然这个感觉也是一种双重的隐喻,我所想象的是当我看到一艘高大的,非常威严的木船走向我的时候的一种感受,但实际上走向我的并不是高船,而是一个一个的人,人实际上是很脆弱的,而船是很高大的,这两者之间又产生这么一种不一样的力量Gary Hill说道。

Viewer观者》

而他1996年创作的观者,给人的感觉更加直接,甚至令观众感到毛骨悚然。在这个作品中,17位产业工人排成一队,他们的双眼直视着观众,每个人的投影都比真人要大许多。17张各不相同的面貌毫不掩饰地展现在观众面前,每隔一段时间他们要同时向前迈出一步,他们似乎每一时刻都有前进的可能。 Gary Hill 的作品唤起了人们直接的感觉体验,站在他的作品面前,你似乎与作品中的人物同时经历着所发生的一切,它使你忘记作品中的人物并不是真实的存在。


WALL PIECE碰壁》

Gary Hill是威尼斯双年展最翘首以待的艺术家之一。《WALL PIECE (碰壁)曾经在第49届威尼斯双年展主展场人类舞台中展出。在作品中有一个男人,也就是艺术家本人,不断地被推向一面墙,同时口中念念有词。作品将文字与图像有节奏地剪接为一体,与此同时一束刺眼闪烁的光线照射在那面墙上。作品试图表现一个人生活在一个一刻也不停止的世界上。那束刺眼的光线闪烁频率与视频中的图像变换丝毫也不协调,给人一种光线要将图像隐去,将其放大或者暗示图像即将出现。

 

Up Against Down上下波动》

作品由一系列投影组成。GaryHill艺术家身体被强压,其反应是可见的。但黑色空间的深度和城府却是模棱两可的。

 

Accordions手风琴》

作品发生在位于马赛中心的贝桑斯的一个很小的阿尔及利亚社区,这部作品通过将时间聚焦于发生在社区街道上的日常琐事,构造出了一个生活写照的空间。这部作品包括五个与声音不同步的视频投影,每个视频投影均采用不同长度的黑白无声的视频片段进行编辑,创作出了一个脉动的、有节奏的系列声像。

Inasmuch As It Is Always Already因它一直都在》

作品由16个视频显示器和影像组成,它们像是一些零散的碎片,堆积起来。每一个部分都是来自于身体的碎片,你无法识别又莫名熟悉。每幅图像都有着微小的运动,循环往复。影像在其中频频发出笔尖写在纸上的沙沙声和肌肤摩擦的声音。

Gary Hill经常在公共场合否认自己是录像艺术家,他更愿意被认同为是一个语言艺术家。本讲座艺术家将通过他丰富的作品创作案例分享与分析,来展开他作为一个语言艺术家的特质。

CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
