The opening ceremony of the “Overseas Training Program of Museum Education and Curation”, an Art Talent Development Project of 2016 funded by the National Art Fund, hosted by the CAFA and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), and organized by the Art Management and Education College of the CAFA and the CAFA Art Museum, was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the morning of November 1st, 2017.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Ms. Patricia Rodewald, the general advisor of the American Alliance of Museums in China. Members of both American and Chinese side and all the program trainees attended the ceremony.

Firstly, Ms. Wendy Woon, the deputy director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, delivered a welcome speech and hoped that the project could promote the cooperation, communication, and development between Chinese and American museums.

Then, Mr. Li Liyan, the cultural counselor of the Chinese Consulate General in New York, made a statement. He pointed out that the United States holds the largest number of museums in the world, while China is a country where museums have grown fastest in the world, both of the two countries sharing a similar development process. He quoted President Xi Jinping’s words hoping that “the rich collections of museums around the world could be used to contribute to the preservation of cultural diversity, the mutual understanding of people of all countries and human civilization and progress.”He expected that the trainees could promote cultural exchanges, mutual understanding and friendship between China and the United States through the platform of the museum.

To ensure the overseas training program is organized and implemented at a high-level, the CAFA and American Alliance of Museums held the“Engagement · Integration: the International Academic Seminar on China-US Museum Public Education” from November 30 to December 1, 2016. More than 100 museums from China and the United States gathered at the CAFA Art Museum and discussed the primary mission of the public education in the art field.
From March to August 2017, the project team selected and recruited talents of public education and exhibition curation from national museums, art galleries, cultural institutions and other organizations. After the recruitment process, 27 participants were selected for the overseas training program from museums nationwide.
The “Overseas Training Program of Museum Education and Curation” consists of four stages: intensive teaching separately in Beijing and the United States, internship in museums, and a summary of achievements in the later stage. The courses include China-America museum exchange, museum education, museum exhibition, education workshop and residentiary internship. The tutors of this project are leading researchers and theoretical experts in museum studies from China and the United States, forming an international and high-quality teacher group.
The trainees will first study at the CAFA Art Museum with a team of experts from major Chinese museums. Then from November 1, all trainees will be trained in New York and Washington in the United States, focusing on studying major American museums. More than 20 education experts, scholars and professionals from the American museums, the top universities and famous art institutions will offer live classes and share the experience of museum education and curation. Then from November 15th, all the trainees will take a month-long resident internship in the major museums in the United States, including Los Angeles County Museum Of Art, High Museum of Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Asian Art Museum in Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Clark Art Institute.
The opening ceremony at the Museum of Modern Art in New York is of great significance. It marks a new historical moment for the exchange and training program of public education and the global professional talents of Chinese and American museums and promotes the further development of modern Chinese museum. The project will enhance the communication between Chinese and American museums, as well as open a new pattern for cultivating talents in Chinese museums.
