莱安德罗·埃利希:太虚之境 前言

上个世纪末,我认识了莱安德罗·埃利希,当时他是一位有前途的年轻艺术家。我有机会追溯他的职业生涯,从默默无闻到获得声望成为一名著名的艺术家。

20世纪90年代,他在布宜诺斯艾利斯学习,尽管年纪轻轻,他的作品开始在各种展览以及重要的艺术活动中逐渐暂露头角。这些早期的成功促使他受邀参加1977年在阿莱格雷港举办的南方共同市场双年展,紧接着又参加了在纽约举行的惠特尼双年展。28岁时,他代表阿根廷参加了第49届威尼斯双年展,他的作品《泳池》获得了巨大成功,和它类似的一件作品这次在北京中央美术学院美术馆展出。那一年,我有幸为威尼斯双年展的阿根廷馆撰写前言,同时有机会协助莱安德罗完成这件巨大的作品。这段经历丰富了我对他的作品的概念架构以及创作过程的理解。在威尼斯的特别经历使他的名字和才华享誉国际,为他打开了机遇的大门,使他能够深入探索自己的独特美学,并在全球当代艺术的交响曲中奏出自己的华丽篇章。

随后的几年里,他的作品在世界各地的重要展览中展出,从哈瓦那到釜山,上海到伊斯坦布尔,布宜诺斯艾利斯到巴黎,东京到马德里,他的国际声誉和地位从中得到巩固。

本次在北京所举办的个人作品展记录了他作为艺术家的漫长历程,也为他之前在一系列不同背景下创作的几件重要作品之间建立对话。前面提及的《泳池》,与《反射之港》、《垂直走廊》、《房间》、《教室》、《电梯》、《云》、《邻居》、《雨》以及《试衣间》等作品以特定的顺序安装,揭示了这位艺术家所创造的诗意世界的深度。本次展览还展出了其他一些为丰富观展体验而特别创作和改造的作品。《大厦》于2004年第一次在巴黎展出时,采用了一个经典的法式建筑立面;而这次的新版本选取了代表唐人街的典型建筑,一个本身存在于中国境外却在这次展览中被安置在中国的首都北京。这一改造产生了一种熟悉与陌生之间的奇妙互动。《失乐园》是将一个不真实的花园设在一个中式庭院的建筑里,从人行道上我们可以看见中国的城市景观倒映在水池上。

事实上,如果我们把莱安德罗·埃利希的艺术看作是从根本上自主存在并受其内在逻辑约束,那么某些问题仍然会在他的整个作品中反复出现;比如,他的作品改变了人们对日常生活各方面的看法,从而创造出一个视觉上的悖论,成为埃利希的创作世界的入口。

为了让我们沉浸在他的这些诗学里,对于当代艺术的整体情况和它所处的社会环境铺垫一些概念基础是很重要的。任何艺术作品都是在一定的背景下存在并产生影响,并在某种程度上形成了对同一环境的回应。探索当代艺术所处的环境,将为我们提供一些线索,让我们更好地走进与欣赏蕴含于莱安德罗·埃利希作品中的力量和独创性。

 

背景

当代艺术是一个复杂的世界,它深刻地打破了我们有局限性的观点,对我们的生活作出破坏性的回应,颠覆或扭曲了我们在这个世界上的生活方式。通过这种力量,它开启了一个感知、概念和存在发生变化的领域,其无法想象的电流拥有独特的能力来创造出重要的意义,并只能由艺术所使用的特殊语言来表现。正是在这个舞台上,一件艺术作品能够表达并阐明那些被更广泛接受的社会话语(如所谓的人文学科)认为难以形容的事物。

在最近的视觉艺术世界的演变中,最引人注目的元素是其宁人眼花缭乱的易变性,新形式的视觉艺术和媒体的出现加剧了这一趋势,它们能够复制、传播和表达艺术家想要传达的任何内容。这些新形式的视觉艺术,给那些没有跟上日益复杂的艺术话语的观众造成了一定的障碍,而这些观众又因为不熟悉当代艺术的内在参照和规则而对一些作品望而却步。从这个意义上说,没有任何一门学科能够像构成视觉艺术的广阔领域那样,与公众拉开如此大的距离。这种情况是由多个因素造成的。直到19世纪和20世纪前卫运动的兴起,绘画在与定义它的代表人物、写实主义者和具体使命的联系中逐渐获得一种自主性,并为之后丰富而复杂的形式和概念上的艺术实验奠定了基础。打开那些实验的大门后,艺术的本质发生了彻底的变化。它所展开的实验任务开始要求对自己的历史有一个知识标准和批判性思维,这也需要专业知识来操作那些有助于理解自我参照性实践的关键,因为这种实践行为削弱了艺术与社会环境的联系,也削弱了其原合法性的来源。由现代性所导致的代表性的减少掀起了一场不可阻挡的艺术语言革命:马塞尔·杜尚和他的现成品永远地改变了我们的观念,不仅仅是对艺术作品的定义,也改变了艺术家、观众和艺术所生存的社会环境的定义。当代艺术话语很快地被加密,并需要一个中间人的存在。评论家和策展人迅速地在其中获得压倒一切的重要性,本质上就像是创作者和广大观众之间的一种解读性联系,为了拉近艺术作品与观众之间的距离。

因此,我们目睹了一场新的急剧衰落,这种衰落进一步疏远了我们与艺术作品的接触,开始背离审美体验的独有乐趣,这反过来又被与作品本身进行不必要抗衡的话语所取代。

结果,艺术成为某些倾向于分离的边缘团体所征服的领域,他们有着明确的目标将自己与主流区分开来。这种裂痕促使了上述中间人的普遍存在,如今,他们与当代实践领域密不可分。这种中介功能与解读的作用有关,而仅仅有解读是远远不够的。艺术作品和它所倡导的审美体验之间往往存在着近乎完全的脱节。

作为站在艺术作品前的现代观众,我们的经验是基于对某种信息的解码,或解读我们认为艺术必须包含的内容。对意义的追求是不言而喻的,但是艺术不属于答案的领域。对任何作品进行阐释都意味着陷入简化或忽略其需要多元解读的危险。从这个意义上讲,专业化的解读模式往往会使一件艺术作品变得贫乏,因为它被限制于一个说教的功能范围内,目的是为了促使和吸引观众的反应。

“以这种方式(对内容信息的阐释)对待艺术作品并非完全无关紧要。但很明显,它是把艺术用于诸如探究思想史、诊断当代文化或创建团结社会等目的。当一个受过一些艺术训练并具有美学感受性的人相应地观看一件艺术作品时,这种方式对于实际情况起不了多大作用。艺术作品作为艺术作品相遇是一种体验,而不是对问题的陈述或回答。艺术不仅仅是关于某件事;艺术本身就是值得重视的事。艺术作品是存在于世界的一件事物,而不仅仅是对世界的描述或评论。”

可以肯定的是,当代艺术的现象包含了一个迷人的世界,充满了多样性、过剩和对定义本身的一种明确抗拒。许多被认为是“难以理解”或直接“不可理解”的艺术作品,往往预示了一种革新,同时开放和扩展了我们自认为所了解的事物。它也倾向于构成唯一可行的方式,用诗意来表达某些主题和观念。基于所有这些原因,我们必须始终捍卫当代艺术的颠覆性品质,打破常规的能力,并(要求我们)从不同的角度看待世界,停止习惯性的思维模式,使我们能够经常通过体验来改变观点。

另一方面,我们遇到了与当代艺术建立稳定关系的深层次困难。当代艺术的诱惑、拒绝与召唤能将我们置于困境、残酷的荒野以及不宜居住的沙漠。只有当一切确定性都被阻拦时,我们才开始接受艺术作为一种体验,它揭示了某些接近真理的东西;这种启示可能最初是关于艺术本身的,但它其实还包括自我、死亡、时间,最终包括我们自己:我们对于活着意味着什么的持续存在的潜意识。

回应艺术需要付出努力,需要剥离否定一切的已知事物,甚至于摒弃对支撑艺术存在的公共传播领域的习惯性顺从。正如前述,因为当代艺术所提倡的是一种类似于体验的东西。只要涉及到愿意对这种挑战作出回应的主体时,任何体验都只有当一个人充分地经历过才能理解和明白,也就是说,吸收或接受。

检验当代艺术的舞台是由这样一些人物搭建起来的,他们在创造循环价值的过程中成为有用或不可或缺的存在,其中的支柱仍然是艺术交易商、策展人和收藏家。这三类代表人物形成了一种精英体系,疏远了观众与艺术之间的联系,扭曲了普通公民可以通过作品享受的体验,使这些作品的可及性被象征性价值所包围—比如,音乐这种大众现象就不会发生这种情况。或许这就是艺术世界孤立于日常生活的原因之一。这种精英主义的形成在当代艺术创作领域及其发展轨迹上投下了象征意义的阴影,并以一种权威的姿态制约着艺术家作品可能存在的传播。这种状况引发了对这些圈子的广泛质疑。这些限制当代艺术现状及其与整个社会、全球经济、文化、政治、历史互动的现象,除了艺术本身的共谋、悖论、突变和轶事之外,并没有削弱艺术影响世界的力量。所幸,艺术只受制于它所提出的价值观,并常常会避开那些自我主张;没有什么能比道德规范更加没有正解,艺术也不能假装自己是有价值的,公平的,甚至是恰当的。艺术的出现、发生是现在和将来都永远无法解释的。

莱安德罗·埃利希的作品将其本身嵌入到这些问题之中,从某种意义上来说,它充满了对艺术与日常生活关系的探索,颠覆了对艺术固有的不可接近性和不可理解性的诊断。


作品

二十世纪的第一个十年,马塞尔·普鲁斯特发表了他的著名小说《追忆逝水年华》,在小说里他描述了一个经典场景:年轻的叙事者在崎岖不平的铺路石上绊倒,促使他的日常生活世界濒临瓦解,引发了一连串元意识的回忆,汇聚成一千页余的作品讲述了他的生活和时代。

随后的十年里,作家马赛多尼奥·费尔南德斯在其小说里描述的阿根廷总统竞选活动中提出,要创造一些工具,打破普通公民日常生活中的固有的物质习惯。这些发明包括可溶解的勺子,台阶不平的楼梯,异常沉重的钢笔,两面用的梳子,所有这些设计都是为了激发我们重新探索平凡的生活,以及习惯的力量如何削弱我们的感知。

这种疏远和非自然化虽然来自身体上的体验,但其影响又延伸到人们最深层的意识,这一发现是上个世纪前卫美学的关键因素之一,直至今天仍然具有重要意义。莱安德罗·埃利希将这种标准推至更远的地方。他的作品使我们对现实的传统观念感到困惑。他所创造的场景充满了不可思议:游泳池、电梯、理发室、室内花园、教室、窗户、楼梯、建筑物的整个立面;这些都将我们置于熟悉的场景中,而并不像是处于非实相的世界里。我们可以迅速辨认出它们的形状,并将其与它们的习惯用途联系起来,但这里也有一些干扰的东西。身处于博物馆这个环境里可以让我们认清事实,但是我们仍然不习惯被自己的视觉感知所背叛。埃利希在表象世界和物质工具之间建立起来的组合方程式,把我们推向了一个临界阈限的边缘,使我们卸下武装并处于边缘地带。他所呈现的对象看起来是已知的、家喻户晓的或可辨认的,但它们却不是;它们属于艺术世界,具有自己的诗学,也有其固有的无用之处。游泳池不能游泳,理发室的镜子不能反射,电梯也不能带我们去任何地方。

当我们看完他的作品,分析并思索出其中的机制后,这些作品所带有的质问能力并不会随之消失。实际上,它才刚刚开始。埃利希将各种场景在我们面前转变成艺术作品,建立了一种双重生活。它们看起来和我们所见到的完全一样,但同时又宣称自己完全是另一种东西。这种交融释放出多层意义,并在建立在它们提出的问题之上的未来里延伸出无限曲折。显然,埃利希的作品并不是努力提供答案,而是保持探究。

除开其他因素,当代视觉艺术的诗学加密促成了各种中间人、卓越的知识和博学的方法的存在与扩散,在这个背景下,莱安德罗·埃利希的艺术提倡一种体验的回归:没有前言或注意事项,而是与作品进行直接、轻松和感性的接触。就像听一段音乐或看一部电影,我们被他的艺术所吸引,完全沉浸在体验中。埃利希用直观的语言、清晰易懂的观点和谨慎的表达,创造出一种有效的、远离封闭式的交流方式。这种方式拉近了观众与当代艺术作品之间的距离——通常利用一个抽象化的假设,但又是真实和具体的存在——并建立一种真诚而深刻的联系。当我们观看电影时,我们不会纠结于它的虚构世界;我们接受它的设定,搁置怀疑,并有意识地忘记我们的对面是演员在扮演着电影巨头所导演和制作的角色。我们努力让自己全身心地沉浸在这个世界里。一旦体验结束,大脑就会开始处理和分析我们在其中“经历”过什么,用一种不同的评价方式来思考出现过的事物、意义、联系、说明和隐喻。就这样,埃利希指出,在我们对自己用于解码现实的特定系统产生怀疑之前,在某种程度上会被感性的外表所吸引,它代表着最近似现实的世界,埃利希通过这种方式来促进对“感官体验”的回归。

这些艺术作品的力量不仅在于它们的表象,还在于它们所引发的“错误或谬误”——超出逻辑或逻辑之外的东西。艺术家通过揭示它们的运作机制,将我们从最初的惊奇和即时体验带入一种更深层次的沉默与观察的境界。解构场景有助于我们反思意义的形成和我们对现实的构建。

“凡事不可只看表面”这句谚语可以很好的诠释莱安德罗·埃利希的艺术项目。他的艺术以这一悖论为标志,既不偏向实质,也不偏向表象,在其运作的语境中,物质世界成为一种隐喻。但是这个隐喻反映了它自身的现实,也成为它自身的一个隐喻。这不是我们所熟悉的那种隐喻,通过引用多少有效的类比或形似来指向其他事物的隐喻。埃利希的作品中,一件物品获得某种征兆或转变为一件不真实的物品,例如楼梯、电梯、房子、人群、城市地标和云:这些不是能够加强自身身份的具体实体,而是一种让人对自身概念产生质疑的东西。由于失去了它们的习惯性功能,这些物体在某种程度上看起来与现实一样的同时,却完全变成了另外一种东西。我想说,莱安德罗·埃利希作品中的对象从来没有展示出真正的自我,而是它们的不可能性;它们指的是它们的自我概念,同时通过展示和破坏它们的状态,将其变为一个事件,逐渐破坏它们的身份。这一切都取决于物体的形象和我们试图定义它的概念之间的距离。埃利希作为一个艺术家所实现的事物的陌生化,颠覆了我们的感知方式,并导致出现理性危机以及对我们所知世界分类的解构。从某种意义上说,他的艺术作品是哲学作品。像古代的哲学家们一样,埃利希通过错误来获得真理。但是他并不是提供了一个无法理解的神秘伎俩,相反,他将现实本身暴露为一个圈套。通过从内侧展示事物,埃利希并没有消除这种神秘感,相反,他赋予物质世界一种超凡脱俗的光泽。

埃利希唤起了日常生活中的基本问题。他通过人性化的姿态,接受现实的不可知性,揭开了其格外朴实的面纱,将日常生活变成了艺术。

If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

CAFA Art Museum Publication Authorization Agreement

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):
