读展|时间的琥珀

“隔离期间,当时间近乎静止,当死亡充斥周围,是美拨动了多数人的心弦。自然之美,是和风轻拂下树叶的微微颤动,美是对生命以及我们蜉蝣般存在的认知。”英国艺术家施拉泽·赫什阿里(Shirazeh Houshiary)在9月12日至10月24日于上海里森画廊(Lisson Gallery)呈现的“时间于此”展览中谈及主题时,如是说。

在展览中,她展出了5件创作于2020年的作品——蓝色的《波涛》、绿色丝绸纹样的《寓言》、纤细的蓝色“舞蹈”于白色背景的《思绪与物质》、蓝与黑交错的《喀迈拉》和看似如同山峦与极光的《大图景》,记录了人类环境氛围的瞬息特性,同时镌刻了自然界稍纵即逝的时空风景。铅笔、天然颜料和创作者细微的身体动态一同被呈现在如同网眼一般的画布之上,为画作赋予无限流动感。

赫什阿里的创作过程破费工时:她将画布平放在工作室的地面上,以水平视角作画,用纹理、线条和创作时的身体状态“填满”画面,因而充满光感的作品会令人联想到指纹、大气层、洋流、缓慢变化的地貌,以及——时间。时间主题在当代艺术领域,随着媒材、形式的拓宽,拥有了更多呈现方式的可能性——让时间“可视”,这也是很多创作者在当代艺术作品中极力捕捉的,隐藏在艺术表面下的无形本质。


凝固:时光如同陷阱

赫什阿里的抽象绘画与雕塑工序繁多,在投入大量时间与劳力的创作中,她将语言与符号融合成冥想、存在与体验的视觉经验,其中的时间过程,令人想起康德所言的“时间乃存于一切直观根底中之必然的表象”,一种先验的内在直观,只有逝去之后,它幻化成片段、乐章、气味、图像,才会重新呈现于世界之中;时间本身也才会成为视觉艺术“玩味”的对象。

“玩味”时间,赋予时间以形象,同时让时间的运动戛然而止,米隆(Myron)的《掷铁饼者》并非先例,它凝固的是运动员准备投掷的瞬间;透纳(J.M.W Turner)在《雨,蒸汽和速度》中定格的不仅是飞驰而来的火车,更是工业时代的摩登速度;而德加(Degas)的芭蕾舞者雕塑、哈罗德·埃杰顿(Harold Edgerton)的子弹飞行摄影,凝固的也都是瞬间的动作。

20世纪以来,在爱因斯坦的物理学理论、弗洛伊德的心理学研究、亨利·伯格森的哲学思想以及乔伊斯与普鲁斯特的文学作品的“推波助澜”下,立体主义和未来主义者们力图以静态的艺术形式表现更为复杂的时间概念,从而实现时间的断裂或加速。而超现实主义者们走向了相反的方向,他们常用静止的钟表来描绘凝固的时间,一如基里科(Giorgio de Chirico)的《占卜者的报酬》(The Soothsayer’s Recompense)中以停止的时钟俯视广场,或者达利(Dali)名作《记忆的永恒》(The Persistence of Memory)里松垮地悬挂柔软的怀表,透溢梦境般的气氛。

“我创作的原因就是为了探索时间的概念……我也试图用摄影回答一个问题:‘时间对人到底意味着什么’,其实这个问题用绘画是无法解决的,只有摄影才能让人思考时间。”杉本博司(Hiroshi Sugimoto)对艺术门类的言说有些过于武断了,但他的《闪电领域》的确将转瞬即逝的时间变为化石,然后“保存”了起来;1976年“展览标本”系列的《北极熊》在这一主题上的表现更为精彩:一只熊面对刚咬死的企鹅,陷入了某种沉思——画面上无尽的阴冷的虚空,让观者以为它是再自然不过的抓拍,而实际它是摆设好的时间“标本”,从复制的时间截面呈现历史背后的存在与时间背后的虚无。在时间的洪流面前,人类会积聚诸多深刻的个体情感体验,自然会渴望利用作品,将流逝的时间定格静止,保存那些易逝的往昔故事和个体经验。

时间变动不居,静态艺术的性质决定它只能在某个场景与瞬间之中“凝固”与“定格”,因而,艺术家通常会采取象征与暗示的方式——沙漏、骷髅、钟表、废墟、纪念碑……来解决静止作品与流动时间之间的矛盾,以此来表现不存在可见实体的时间。海德·法斯纳科特(Heide Fasnacht)在2000年创作的雕塑《爆破》(Demo)颇为经典,他用泡沫聚苯乙烯和氯丁橡胶,定格了一大栋楼在爆炸时的一刻,将射向四周空间的无数碎片悬置于空中,“凝固”了本来在一瞬之间发生的场景。它更大的价值,恐怕在于多层面地处理了时间的维度:将真实发生的瞬息时间凝固为相对的“永恒”,而观众于四周徘徊时体验到的时间,又是缓慢流动的。

法斯纳科特“凝固”的时间是相对的,而克里斯蒂安·马克雷(Christian Marclay)的视频作品《时钟》(The Clock)中的时间则是“可编辑”的,他从上千部电影中取样“显示出时间的钟表镜头”,并加以剪辑,汇成一部时长24小时的影片,作品中镜头显示的时间和一天中的每一个实际时间完全吻合。这部“枯燥”的时间电影在纽约、伦敦、旧金山等地进行过24小时的展览,也许并不会有人看完它,但我们都明了它的寓意:时间被打碎,然后又在另一维度的线性时间中被追溯和“凝固”。相形之下,马克雷的作品还不是最“枯燥”的——安迪·沃霍尔(Andy Warhol)著名的《帝国大厦》(Empire)在让观者意识到时间缓慢近乎凝固的流逝方面无出其右:1965年的首映中,到场200多名观众在半小时内全部走掉,因为它时长485分钟——8小时零5分钟,却只有一个镜头:纽约帝国大厦。

沃霍尔以影像为载体,承载出“8小时”这“份”时间的具体形状,同时记录了时间的整体流逝状态。“凝固时间”类的艺术作品,一如作家玛格丽特·阿特伍德在小说中所表现的,“现在”被无限延长,成为永恒静止的现在时,如同一个莫比乌斯环的诅咒——“时光如同陷阱,我深陷其中”,她在《使女的故事》中如是说。

 

渐变:时间蜿蜒盘旋

欧洲静物绘画颇青睐以腐烂的水果象征人类必然经历的脆弱和衰老,萨姆·泰勒·伍德(Sam Taylor Wood)采用分段摄影术拍摄的《静物》(Still Life)就是这一母题在当代的延续——主题相同,寓意相似:盛在精美碗中的水墨慢慢腐烂,最后完全称为一滩碎渣,上面爬满蛆虫。这种“渐变”策略的艺术作品试图还原时间流变的状态——以加速或延缓作品的呈现节奏,艺术家得以对文化题材进行“变形”,同时加入自我所体验的生命状况,通过艺术语汇,转化为一种新的阐述时间主题的方式。

摄影、录像技术创造了全新的时间维度,让不断流逝、无法被握住的时间有了“暂停”或“快进”——换言之,“渐变”的可能。比尔·维奥拉(Bill Viola)的录像作品多以时间为主题,《逆生》的8分钟里,一个男人在黑暗中,全身浸满黑色液体,这些液体渐渐上升,微弱地闪光;水流加剧,慢慢汇聚,最后变为一股洪流,水之颜色从黑色,变棕、变红,最后成为清水。《逆生》如水,时间由维奥拉的操控而倒流,身处其中的人类,一如他所言,都“是时间的生物”。以液体为基本创作元素的还有隋建国,他用一根铁丝每天蘸一下蓝色油漆,然后在本子上签名。随着时间流逝,油漆球越来越大,这个不断增大的球,昭示了时间令人惊异的纯粹“质地”,“我好像把这个东西当作我生命的一个伴生体,我活着它就在生长”,隋建国的《时间的形状》,是一种黏性的包裹形态,而且它在某种意义上而言,永远都不会“完结”,就像时间一样。

行为艺术、电影、录像等媒介的“运动”性,让时间在艺术作品中的“渐变”成为常态。不同于中世纪的艺术家,在呈现“时间”的主题时,当代艺术家可以通过并不持久的材料加以“渐变”。1996年安塞姆·基弗(Anselm Kiefer)的画作《海边的波西米亚》(Bohemia Lies by the Sea)中,涂在画布上厚厚的颜料组成了田间小路、荒凉田野与乌云满布的天空,而这些灰色或黑色的颜料不断剥落,让画布出现一块块空白,更让材料的自然演变成为画作想要表达的内涵——时间让颜料从作品中剥离,在画面的空白之处留出“空隙”,创作者与观者因而得以凝视德国文化历史中黑暗的过去。

在渐变的时间中,它的步伐也许会微妙地或戏剧性地摇移不定。谢德庆在纽约工作室里,建造一个木笼子,将自己孤独监禁于此,不交谈,而只阅读、写作、听收音机——一年,以此与流动的时间“作斗争”。玛丽娜·阿布拉莫维奇(Marina Abramović)2002年于纽约肖恩·凯利画廊(Sean Kelly Gallery)所做的行为表演,时间没有那么长,就12天,但和谢德庆的创作异曲同工,也是将现实时间与艺术品持续时间融为一体的尝试:在一个类似阳台式的建筑物里,她不吃不语,不进行任何读写活动,只有一个节拍器以秒为单位标记时间的流逝。她的《海景房》(The House with the Ocean View)没有可以“杀时间”的精神活动,时间之水奔涌向前,时间中的艺术家却暂时被“定格”了。这其中的韵味,颇似赫什阿里1987年在明斯特雕塑十年展上参与的《拂晓神殿》(Temple of Dawn),一座高达6米、由泥土和草组成的巨塔,其中螺旋形态的结构中,时间的蜿蜒盘旋让它格外壮观,直至时间毁掉了它——1992年,这座“神殿”在暴风雨中被摧毁,让人联想到作家乔纳森•斯威夫特(Jonathan Swift)的《论时间》:

“永远吃,吃不腻,

把一切吞噬,把一切毁弃,

永远不会感到酒足饭饱,

直到最后把世界吃掉。”

 

重构:时空隐藏线索

爱因斯坦让我们意识到时间的流动并非固定常量,因而南非艺术家威廉姆·肯特里奇(William Kentridge)就可以通过不断的先擦除再画上的素描与电影结合,构成定格动画,或者通过多媒体舞台剧来“拒认时间”(Refuse the Hour),以便抹除过去、重新勾勒和塑造由时间构成的历史与当下。

对时间“重构”,作品中对过往历史的回望才得以展开。艺术史家巫鸿曾言:“当代艺术可以被作为一种共有特殊目的的理论构成,可以自身构造出一种特殊的时间性(temporarily)和空间性(spatialit)。空间、时间和身份所构成的‘三角’关系是众多当代艺术作品观念上的基础。”就像艺术家朱利安·施纳贝尔(Julian Schnabel)在上世纪80年代以陶器碎片构筑的油画作品,以其史诗般的空间规模唤起了关乎狂暴愤怒的情感,又在主题上呼应了时光的流逝。

赫什阿里曾创作组画《记忆》和《光轨》,《记忆》的形象从白色的背景中涌现,又逐渐淡入其中;《光轨》则展示了光从黑暗中产生复又进入黑暗的过程,两相对照,需要观者耐心长久地——“花时间”去观看,才能在一定时间之后“重构”自身的感知。这个奇妙的过程,在瞬时与永恒之间“重构”了一种别具意味的对望关系,帮助所有参与其中的人——创作者与观看者,洇渡过漫长时间的茫茫大海。

在时间之中,艺术的皮相被层层剥去,一切可能会还原为本质。就如同福克纳在《喧哗与骚动》中所言:“不把心力全部用在征服时间行,因为时间反正是征服不了的”——正是对时间线形前进的洪流的不可抗拒、不可触碰,成为艺术家“重构”这一命题的内驱力:即使人们时刻感受到时间带来的作用力,却始终无法目睹它的容颜,艺术创作才会赋予这一概念之物以可视形状——以凝固、渐变、重构等诸多语言方式、构成“时间的琥珀”,透过这些“琥珀”,艺术的结构不断被打破和重组,价值就于这“一刹那间”闪现——当然,或许旋即又会消逝无迹。

“绘画是取消连续性的艺术,因而失去了时间性,也正是因此而使其诉诸空间。”今天看来,哲学家弗里德里希·谢林(F.W.J Schelling)颇与杉本博司不谋而合的论调似乎已经过时了,但他的话语里,却隐藏着艺术创作的线索:对时间的重视与关注。由此观之,似乎表现时间主题的最精彩的当代艺术作品,总也比不上普鲁斯特从玛德琳小蛋糕中感受到的生命流逝的悲剧意识更为宏大和壮美;特别是,当作者拖着病体去吃下午茶,进入庭院、踩在较低的铺路石板上的那个“刹那”,感受到人的不同生命阶段从音乐中获得的至高幸福感,那是超越了线性时间的,绵长而壮阔的审美世界,是时空的无限可能之中,一枚“琥珀”对物质世界的反响与回应。

时间主题的艺术作品,凝结成一枚枚“时间的琥珀”。1999年,美国艺术家安德里亚·鲍尔斯(Andrea Bowers)创造了一枚“形态特殊”的“琥珀”——录像作品《等待》(Waiting)中,一位花样滑冰运动员双膝跪于冰面上一动不动,然后突然从冰面上抬起了手——在期待着一个节目或者一个故事的错愕观众面前,这段45秒钟的“情节”连续循环播放,无穷无尽,似乎时间已经停止。在这块“琥珀”连接的虚空中,没有了时间的过去与未来,却捕捉、塑造出了“美”——“时间于此”,它与隔离期间赫什阿里看到的,和风轻拂下微微颤动的树叶,并无二致。

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
