从“微不足道”的材料里看到设计的未来

现代制造业的飞速发展使我们的经济社会受益匪浅,我们被越来越多看似丰富的材料包围,日益增长的需求改变了我们的生活,同时也给自然环境带来了各种不良后果。对于材料的充分利用和合理循环,已经成为人类社会持续发展的必然诉求。设计师们在“可循环”理念的引领下,对材料生命周期的往复进行着新的思考与阐释。“可循环”这一关键词涉及到材料循环的不同流程,首先就是对于可循环原生材料的改造利用和可降解材料的发明。

“超本土化”这一概念,在材料设计领域中指的是在维持生态平衡的前提下,深入原生态本土地区,依据当地本土特性或物产进行设计生产,以提升当地的收入并保护生物的多样性。例如墨西哥设计师费尔南多·拉波塞与土著社区合作,使用当地的玉米壳制作瓦片和镶嵌细工,这种材料从深紫色到奶油色种类丰富,可以广泛运用于家居设计中。新材料的生产为墨西哥本土农民提供了额外的收入来源,鼓励他们保护和种植本土玉米品种,而不是选择更有利可图的转基因品种。“超本土化”这一关键词所展示的案例对当下中国正在进行的设计下乡具有一定的借鉴意义,也为材料的可持续性发展提供了一种新的路径。

我国的设计师在超本土化方面也有着丰富的设计创造。如设计师张雷借鉴余杭纸伞的传统工艺,用天然胶水把皮宣纸一层层糊在伞骨上,制作了《飘》纸椅,利用宣纸细腻的质感和韧性,使其既具备温暖的触摸感,也能提供非常好的支持力。原本给人柔弱感的宣纸,在特定工艺下,竟也可以具备实木一般的牢固度。

设计师马琳·惠苏德来自一个养蜂人家庭,于是蜜蜂就成了她设计新工艺形式的灵感来源。蜂胶是蜜蜂制造的一种类似玻璃的材料,一个蜂箱每年产出的蜂胶不到100克,使得这种材料极为珍贵。通过将蜂胶制成花瓶等有趣且芳香浓郁的工艺品,惠苏德希望能够促使人们对蜜蜂等昆虫给予更多的关心和尊重。

材料的有毒物质处理也是可循环过程中不可缺少的一环。铝土矿残渣,也被称为“红泥”,是铝工业中的危险副产品,每一份铝的提取都会产生超过两份以上残渣。Thus That工作室与铝工厂及研究实验室合作,发现这种废料可以被加工成陶瓷体和釉料。《红泥》这套餐具是他们研究出来的成果之一,展示了有毒废料如何被转化为安全而美丽的东西。

松树是世界上主要的木材来源,占松树质量20%至30%的松针却通常会被丢弃。设计师塔玛拉·奥乔拉则试图研究这数十亿未使用的松针的潜在用途,通过粉碎、浸泡和压制等技术,将松针转化为纺织品、复合材料和纸张,还可以在这个过程中提取精油和染料。

在对传统材料进行再塑造、再利用的同时,设计师和科学家还积极采用尖端科技来研发更具可持续性的材料,努力通过新兴的科技材料与生物材料等展现材料的未来。在这个过程中,跨学科实践成为一种共识,设计学与生物学、计算机科学等学科紧密结合,也因此诞生了门类多样、令人叹为观止的前沿设计作品。

气凝胶是一种具有纳米孔隙结构的轻质材料,被科学界誉为“改变世界的神奇材料”。在“天问一号”火星探测器中,使用了我国独立自主研发的多项“黑科技”,其中,火星车使用的热控材料是新型隔热保温材料——纳米气凝胶,它可以应对极热和极寒两种严酷环境,而且其超轻特性极大地减小了火星车的负担,让它能跑得更快更远。

亮片看似小而无害,但却对海洋生物构成了严重的威胁。它们由石油基材料制成,废弃后通常会流入海洋并被海洋动物误认为是食物。而生物虹彩亮片则是一种由纤维素制成的可生物降解的替代品。纤维素作为一种天然丰富的材料,质量轻、强度高且可堆肥,它的闪光颜色为天然形成。

“超级树”(SuperTree)是由伦敦的生态逻辑工作室(ecoLogicStudio)设计的一个藻类养殖农场原型。树木是当前城市圈基础设施的一部分,而“超级树”则重新利用了树的原始形态,将其转变为高分辨率、高生产力的光生物反应器,能够将人类新陈代谢与微藻生态循环联系起来。能量流、物质流、信息流在整个系统中交汇,使“超级树”形成了一个自给自足的微型生态系统。

凯罗尔·克莱特多年来一直探索真菌菌丝体作为可生物降解材料的表面处理潜力,并为污染严重的纺织工业寻找更可持续的替代品。菌丝体由密集的细枝网组成,自然地存在于地下。我们可以利用其消化纤维素并将其转化为天然复合材料的能力,通过改变温度和湿度等环境参数,来引导菌丝体在织物上的生长。

通过研究和参考自然界的创造模式,可以将生物学原理融入设计过程之中。在生物设计领域,设计师已经不再满足于对材料形状进行塑造,而是开始创造和发展新的生物材料。生物蕾丝(Biolace)项目就旨在探索合成生物学在未来制造中的潜力,设计师通过生物基因改造方式对植物进行处理,使其不仅可以开花结果,根部还能长出可降解的生物蕾丝花边。

近日,联合国《生物多样性公约》第十五次缔约方大会第一阶段会议在云南昆明举办。尊重自然、顺应自然、保护自然,构建人与自然和谐共生的地球家园,正在成为全人类的共识。“向自然学习”“运用最具生态效率的生命智慧”,设计界进行了大胆的探索与实践。以材料领域为窗口,我们惊喜地看到,除了制造更高效、轻便、美观的产品,设计师们通过跨领域的连接与融合,创造出自适应、自调节、自赋能的“新自然物”。艺术在前方的探索,激发出研究者与实践者更广泛的兴趣与创造力,让我们有理由期待一个更可持续的未来。

位于波兰华沙市中心的“空气泡泡(AirBubble)”游乐场,是世界上第一个整合微藻空气净化生物技术的游乐场,它由52个大型生物反应器围成一圈,硼硅酸盐玻璃瓶中装有绿色小球藻培养物,可以过滤被污染的空气。伦敦的“生态逻辑工作室(ecoLogicStudio)”将这个装置的主体设计成供儿童玩耍的空间,它同时又是一个独特的城市实验室——应用生物技术解决空气污染问题以及减少对儿童健康的影响。

荷兰设计师莉莉安·范·达尔(Lilian van Daal)模仿植物细胞的结构,通过3D打印创造出一把独特的椅子,在不使用软垫或填充物的情况下,通过改变结构的疏密度,来保证椅子的弹性和舒适度,使其重量超轻,便于使用。

太阳能、风能、水能、细菌、纤维素、电磁波……在生态环保的理念下,新的创意、材料、技术应用于各种各样的设计中。中央美术学院和伦敦设计博物馆共同主办的展览“万物生息——后石油时代的材料与设计”为观众展现了材料的进化和变迁,种种设计的创造性和多样化令人大开眼界。

“事实上,设计界对于生态问题和可持续发展的关注早在20世纪60年代就渐成趋势,绿色设计、生态设计、可持续设计的方法和理念也从那个时候起日臻成熟。而大量的解决方案,如可循环、再利用、省材料、可降解、高品质、易拆解等等,都基于我们对‘人造物’的理解和‘材料’的研究。”中央美术学院设计学院院长宋协伟说。

人类设计史,其实也是一部材料更新的历史。胶合板比实木更坚固、更轻,二战期间,它被用于制造飞机,后用来设计舒适、便宜、适合人体的椅子;铜、铝等金属的大规模提炼和应用,解决了工业、交通设计等领域的诸多难题;纳米材料、3D打印等技术的运用使得高科技属性的设计变得更轻松……

无论是土、石、金属,以及常见的竹木、松针,还是容易被忽略的藻类菌群,这些“微不足道”的材料,构成了我们的日常所需之物,也成为设计的基础。在化石能源对环境的压力越来越大的今天,设计师们将目光转向传统,也看向未来,寻求在新科技的加持下,更新对材料的认知,创造一种对环境和人类更友好的设计之道。

“中国的传统理念讲究道法自然、天人合一,这与可持续设计的理念有共通的地方。” 中央美术学院设计学院教师王乃一说。比如广东地区的香云纱是一种采用纯植物染料薯莨染色的丝绸面料,这提示我们,上千年来采用的材料和工艺,其实很符合今天的现代理念,解决新的问题不一定都用新材料,传统资源的创新性转化是一个重要的方法和路径。

生物材料如近年热门的菌丝体材料,受到设计师的青睐。菌丝体是真菌物质生成的类似血管状菌丝的集成体,具有超强的粘合力、可降解属性,可用于包装、服装、建材等多个领域。

材料设计也意味着不断的突破与创新,航天科技材料及工艺技术研究所的一项“黑科技”——“凝固的蓝烟”纳米气凝胶,是火星探测器“天问一号”建设的重要突破,它代表着人类对于宇宙探索的梦想,也代表着中国在材料研发的未来力量。

中央美术学院美术馆设计部主任纪玉洁是“万物生息”展的策展人之一,她认为,在材料更加丰富、商业力量更加强大的今天,设计师的态度和立场更加重要,是以“有计划的废止”刺激消费,还是进行可持续的低碳设计,十分考验设计师的责任观和伦理观。

材料是构成人类社会生存发展的物质基础,与我们的生活息息相关,而材料的力量与价值往往因为其普遍性与基础性而被低估甚至忽略。通过艺术家的创作,我们可以看到设计在解决紧迫的环境与社会问题方面发挥的重要作用,以及设计师们对于可持续发展的使命与责任感。在材料的进化与设计的创新中,我们想象未来,创造未来,也保护未来。

Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
