“图示新探:延安文艺座谈会讲话与现实主义艺术”系列学术讲座,由中央美术学院美术馆直属党支部主办,计划从一系列与中央美术学院美术馆收藏与展示的具体作品出发,围绕1942年毛泽东同志《在延安文艺座谈会上的讲话》对艺术创作与艺术研究产生的影响展开,譬如:文艺创作方向的转变、创作主题的变化、创作中对于人民群众形象的表现、历史史实与艺术表达的关系等等,以此进一步探讨《在延安文艺座谈会上的讲话》对中国现代美术创作中新图示的创造以及中国文艺理论研究等方面所产生的深远影响。

本系列学术讲座在第一期拟举办五讲,邀请殷双喜、杨灿伟、吴雪杉、于洋和李垚辰等美术史学者主讲,主题包括王式廓的《改造二流子》、延安版画与鲁艺木刻工作团、周令钊的《五四运动》、宋步云的《北平解放》和袁运生的《水乡的记忆》等。系列讲座的总召集为中央美术学院美术馆直属党支部书记韩文超。

2023年5月5日由中央美术学院教授吴雪杉开启第三讲,主题为:革命开端:周令钊《五四运动》的“历史书写”。此次讲座为中央美术学院美术馆与中央美术学院壁画系直属党支部和中共北京市朝阳区高碑店乡半壁店党总支部委员会联合主办。

吴雪杉

毕业于中央美术学院美术史专业,2003-2015年任教于中央民族大学,现为中央美术学院人文学院教授。研究领域为中国美术史,近年尤致力于中国现代艺术史及视觉文化研究。

讲座由美术馆直属党支部书记韩文超主持

讲座伊始,美术馆直属党支部书记韩文超对本次讲座的开场环节进行主持。首先,韩文超书记对此系列学术讲座的目的与背景进行了简要说明。

举办此次系列学术讲座的缘起是为了纪念1942年毛泽东同志《在延安文艺座谈会上的讲话》发表八十周年。举办系列讲座有两个目的,一方面是希望对重要馆藏和已展出重要作品进行一次新的聚焦和讨论。另一方面,也希望以作品为出发点,与诸位学者一起探讨对于中国现代美术创作中新图示的产生以及文艺理论研究等方面所产生的深远影响。

同时,此系列学术讲座还有两个背景:一是在二十大胜利闭幕之际,全党全国全行业全系统正在掀起学习二十大的热潮。二是美术馆作为我们学校的窗口和平台单位,富有弘扬和展示美院优秀作品、优良传统、传播优秀文化、普及大众美育的责任和使命,美术馆支部也将此次系列讲座作为学校层面的二级党校和党员教育的一个公共平台,共享教育资源,联学共进。

接着韩文超书记对壁画系直属党支部和中共北京市朝阳区高碑店乡半壁店党总支部委员会对此次活动的支持、参与表示感谢,并向参与此次讲座活动的师生表示欢迎。

在介绍了“图示新探”系列学术讲座第三讲的主讲嘉宾吴雪杉教授和主讲内容之后,韩文超书记对本次讲座做了两点补充:第一点,敬爱的周令钊先生于2023年1月3号离开了我们,中央美术学院美术馆在3月份举办的“大道丰碑”系列展以及系列讲座借以缅怀包括周令钊先生在内的为学校建设和中国美术事业做出杰出贡献的六位先生。今天的讲座围绕着周先生的《五四运动》进行深入的解读,也是一种对周先生的纪念和缅怀;第二点,本次讲座的聚焦于周先生的《五四运动》进行讨论,讲座的时间选择在五四青年节后一天举办,具有特殊的意义。习近平总书记说过:“青年是社会上最富活力、最具创造性的群体,理应走在创新创造前列”,希望参与讲座的师生能够有所收获。

接下来,吴雪杉教授开始了本次讲座的讲授。他首先对讲座内容的研究缘起进行了简要说明。2019年中央美术学院美术馆举办展览“为新中国造型——周令钊百岁艺术展”并组织了“为新中国造型:周令钊与中国现代艺术学术研讨会”,吴雪杉教授接受邀请并选择了周令钊先生的作品《五四运动》进行报告。

吴雪杉教授接着对本次讲座的内容做了简单的介绍。周令钊的油画《五四运动》(1951)以游行学生与军警冲突为中心,体现出1950年代初期关于五四运动的历史认知。一些存世的历史照片可能对周令钊的创作有所启发。而在完成之后,这一油画作品又为后续相同题材的主题性创作提供了图式,成为其他艺术家效仿、修正的对象。

本次讲座从周令钊先生的油画《五四运动》(1951)“斗争”和“宣传”两个主要情节以及发生地天安门切入,围绕两个问题进行讨论:一是周令钊如何在1951年的特定历史情境下进行“五四运动”的绘画创作,二是现实主义历史画如何平衡历史事实与艺术想象。

《为新中国造型——周令钊先生百岁艺术展》中展出

吴雪杉教授首先对《五四运动》的创作背景进行介绍。1951年3月,确定由文化部主办,由中央革命博物馆筹备处组织实施的“中国共产党三十周年纪念展览”征集党史题材的美术作品。展览计划征集91件作品,委托中央美术学院创作了27件绘画和6件雕塑。27件绘画作品中的《五四运动》题材分派给了周令钊先生。

在这一铺垫后,吴雪杉教授开始对周令钊的画面选择进行讨论。1953年人民美术出版社为该画出版单幅画页附有说明文字:“1919年5月4日,中国人民掀起了反帝反封建的‘五四’运动,这是中国新民主主义革命的开始。图为当时北京的青年学生在天安门前示威的情形。”画面主要有两个情节:一是浩浩荡荡的游行学生正在冲破军警阻挠,这是画面的高潮。二是学生宣传和散发传单。远处的天安门提示出游行地点。学生是画面中当之无愧的主体,既与军警义无反顾地英勇斗争,又在大声疾呼,召唤围观民众加入斗争的行列。

吴雪杉教授指出,周令钊选择刻画这样一个画面与“五四”亲历者许德珩的建议有关。早在1949年5月4日,《人民日报》刊登的《五四运动介绍》一文就突出了在天安门前与军警发生冲突后示威群众的愤怒。吴雪杉教授指出“愤怒”这一概念在20世纪50年代重审五四运动时变得非常重要,它成为与军警斗争以及火烧赵家楼的一个动因。接着吴雪杉教授提供了一些材料来佐证这一观点。

吴雪杉教授针对“愤怒”这一叙事提出了三个问题,试图将50年代通行的五四话语与历史本身进行比对:在1919年5月4日愤怒发生在何时何地?学生群体因何愤怒?愤怒到什么程度?

史料可以证明学生开始变得愤怒的时间是下午2点到4点左右,地点在东交民巷,因在东交民巷受阻引发了愤怒情绪,推动全体游行队伍转向曹汝霖宅使事件到达高潮。吴雪杉教授通过将历史事实与1950年代通行的五四话语进行对比,指出在1950年代的叙事将愤怒的时间提前的同时也改变了愤怒的空间关系。

另外,吴雪杉教授指出已有学者对五四运动中的军警与学生的关系的进行研究,发现在1919年5月4日的游行活动中,学生在天安门前并没有与军警发生冲突,镇压实际上发生在火烧赵家楼之后。

吴雪杉教授接着对画面的“宣传”情节进行分析。许德珩1979年撰写的《五四运动六十周年》为理解周令钊油画中的这一情节提供了线索。另外他强调了“五四”当日“向群众说明游行示威的意义”这一场景。“五四”当日集会、游行声势浩大,有群众围观和加入游行行列,也在情理之中。许德珩在回忆时可能做了一些突出或者强调。许德珩作为当事人可能向周令钊讲述了相似的内容,促使他将学生与群众的互动作为画面的一个重要情节,还将两名参与游行的学生画成自己与夫人周若菊的自画像。

许德珩为什么强调群众?周令钊为什么要强调群众?吴雪杉教授据此指出要描绘五四运动,必须考虑其中革命的一面,要突出表现无产阶级,因此群众自然成为画面的一部分。

至此,吴雪杉教授对周令钊的《五四运动》的信息的来源进行了总结:信息来自于亲历者许德珩以及当时的报纸,其中最权威的就是《人民日报》,在报纸和亲历者背后还有领袖观点的影响。这些信息共同构成了周令钊创作《五四运动》的背景,宏大的新民主主义叙述和抽象的革命理念被浓缩到有限的画面之中。

接下来,吴雪杉教授针对周令钊《五四运动》的创作进程中围绕画面内容引发的争议进行讨论。

1951年9月前后,中央美术学院组织社会各界专家对本校老师创作的革命历史画进行观摩和提修改意见,这些意见以《历史画看稿子的提意见记录》保存下来。其中任职于中央财政部的李成瑞对周令钊《五四运动》油画提出了三点意见:第一,不应该画北洋政府的五色旗,更不能画在正中间的显著位置上;第二,旗子上的标语太少,只有“废除廿一条”;第三,天安门不够雄伟。《人民日报》的意见与李成瑞不同,《人民日报》的同志肯定了五色旗在画中出现的必要性,但也认为不应像初稿中那样“突出”,因为会让观看者误以为五色旗领导了革命前进。

吴雪杉教授结合五四运动的照片资料以及文献记录说明,在1919年5月4日的游行队伍确有两面五色旗,最终画面中只保留了游行实况里两面五色旗中的一面。从最终完成的作品来看,关于五色旗的改动大致有两点:一是保留五色旗并将其移至画面右侧三分之一处;二是在五色旗前添加了“北京大学”的四字横幅。

李成瑞的第二条意见关于旗子上的标语,认为旗子上的标语太少。目前画面可认的除“废除二十一条”之外还有“取消中日协定”“杀千刀的卖国贼”“还我青岛”。根据五四运动的回忆以及影像资料来看,除了五色旗之外都是白旗,旗子都是单人手持,“直旗竖写”。但是在周令钊笔下,画面里面出现大量红色的三角旗,旗上有一些黑色的印记,似乎写了字,以此增添革命色彩;另外出现了两个横幅“北京大学”和“取消中日协定”。这种改变在增加画面生动性的同时,也更符合1950年代对革命的理解和期待,革命感得到了更好的突出。

李成瑞的的第三条意见认为画面中“天安门不够雄伟”。而目前所见画面上的天安门尚属雄伟,体量上已经占据了接近三分之一的画面空间。吴雪杉教授指出了提出这一意见的两种可能:一是当时作品还未完稿,因此显得潦草;二是周令钊受到许德珩的影响,根据其回忆有意识地将天安门画得陈旧,城墙上的颜色比较灰暗,质感也甚为斑驳,城墙和楼顶上长着杂草。从一方面来看,这一情况在某种程度上是事实,在另一方面陈旧的天安门被用来表明北洋政府统治的腐朽,具有一定合理性,是一种有意识的艺术处理。

吴雪杉教授指出,塑造天安门时周令钊也许还参考了甘博1919年拍摄的《学生示威游行》。照片拍摄1919年11月29日发生在天安门前的一场抗议活动。《五四运动》与这一照片观看天安门的视角极为相似,此外,吴雪杉教授注意到,以甘博的拍摄方式来画人群必定会遮挡天安门,为了衬托天安门的高大和雄伟,周令钊还采取了两种不同的视角对现实进行艺术加工:对前景中游行、集会的学生用俯视,对天安门则是仰视。

在对《五四运动》创作进程中的内容争议以及可能的影像参考进行分析后,吴雪杉教授接着探讨了五四运动图像的社会需求。在周令钊《五四运动》之前,早期的大众传媒借用一些跟五四运动无关的作品表现五四运动。1951年周令钊《五四运动》完成之后,这一油画就成为再现五四运动的标志性图像,与五四运动相关的出版物开始频繁引用这件作品。

吴雪杉教授聚焦“为什么历史需要图像?”这一问题进行探讨。在诸多出版物的材料看来,历史图像能够用生动的图像更好地教育读者。1950年6月,《人民美术》编辑部曾邀请一批著名画家如徐悲鸿、吴作人、王式廓、董希文等讨论历史画创作问题,与会者达成的共识之一是:

“有高度思想性的历史画,必须帮助观众比看材料更深刻的了解历史,而且必须借此增加必胜的信念与斗争的热情。观众向美术家要求的是写实与理想的统一。过于重视想象而脱离历史的实际是不对的,过于重视历史事实而不注意其本质也是不对的。”

在社会主义现实主义还没有成为准则的1950年,这种创作方法也被称为“统一了写实与想象的现实主义的创作方法”,周令钊接受了这一历史画的创作原则,通过画笔表现的是历史本质,而不是历史事实本身。吴雪杉教授指出,周令钊的《五四运动》为五四运动主题性图像创作奠定了基础,成为后来者必须参考借鉴的“图式”。

借英国历史学家彼得·伯克(Peter Burke)在《图像证史》中所说“画家也用自己的方式为解释过去做出了贡献”,吴雪杉教授指出,对于画家和他们的历史画而言,证明历史不是他们的工作,用图像书写或重写历史,以此教化读者才是他们的目的。艺术家、画家可以提供一些直达本质的图像,给读者一些信念、热情、勇气。反过来说,“一切历史都是当代史”,目的不同,需求不同,同一段历史本身也在召唤不同的画法,对历史不断的重写和历史本身之间实际上存在一种张力,这种张力在图像的书写中承担着某种角色。若从后现代主义的角度来看历史画,会发现历史画有其存在的合理性。

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

CAFA Art Museum Publication Authorization Agreement

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors.
